To remove the starter from your Shovelhead, first disconnect the battery and take it out of the battery tray. Remove the battery tray, two bolts that bolt to the oil tank and the rubber mounts. Take the battery cable off the starter motor and take the bracket that supports the rear of the starter motor off. Dec 20, 2013 Good day! I kept it on a battery tender. Recently the tender stayed on charging mode. I tried 2 other slow chargers. The battery would not stop charging. I took the battery out of the bike when using the other 2 chargers.
The voltage is 12.8 and the chargers put out over 13 volts. I had the battery tested at the HD dealership where I purchased it. I had to leave it there. The equipment to do the testing takes several hours. The next day at the dealership I was told the battery was fine.
The cold cranking amperage exceeded the battery's rating. I brought a battery tender in and showed that parts employee the battery would not fully charge. The parts employee could not give me an explanation. I am now stuck with a defective battery that that dealership states it is fine. I reported this to Harley Davidson customer service. It was a waste of time!
